Group chat – this awesome feature keeps conversations between members of a group in one stream. Unlike an email where you can forget to reply all, accidentally leave off a key contributors email address or bcc someone that doesn’t need to be in on the conversation, @groupme eliminates that from being a possibility. Once you set the members of a particular group, you never have to worry about them missing info. Because it’s an app that works on cell phones, tablets, and computers, and it crosses multiple operating systems (like apple, android, and Windows) you never have to worry about access to information. Another benefit is that the conversation happens In real time, allowing for a familiar medium of communication (who doesn’t text?!) With immediate updates. You could easily have a @groupme group for you entire org, adding new members as they join, switching members to an alumni group as they graduate, and even have a group for all standing committees. Admittedly, all these groups can get confusing and you have to fight the urge to over compartmentalize but I think the good here outweighs the bad.
Key point– another pro/con of the app is that the messages are permanent. As of right now, You can’t erase individual messages or content of a @groupme chat, it’s either all or nothing. This is good for holding groups or individuals responsible but could be problematic if inappropriate or irrelevant content finds its way into the stream. As a preventative measure, be sure to have a clear set of rules and guidelines for what is and isn’t appropriate for org-related groups.
Money feature – the app allows you to collect money electronically! How easy is it collect dues If members can do it with the push of a button on their electronic devices!? This feature is a secure and efficient way to keep your org running smoothly for your on the go lifestyle. It can be connected to a PayPal account or to your org bank account if your financial institution allows it. Of course the con of this is that it’s electronic and recently there have been breach of security issues with major retailers. Still this is a nice feature to have available, just in case!
App Integration – @groupme allows you to seamlessly share info from several different apps. Need to send reminders about meeting details, share your google calendar with the group. Need to shoot your group and article from WordsofGR8TNESS or a quote from chriscspeaks.com for a little motivation, send and share your favorite articles. You can also keep documents available to the group by sharing access to Dropbox. All of these features make planning events over the summer easier. Keeps key contributors in the loop and organized. You are super busy as a student, why not get all the help you can get. @groupme can help your time as a student leader a little easier, leaving you time to be More Powerful, More Effective, and More Balanced.
